An interesting story came to my attention over the weekend, the story of Cliven Bundy and his stand-off with the Federal Government of the USA. The battle is no doubt not over yet but there was a victory for people power this weekend when the Bureau of Land management (BLM) stood down and abandoned their attempts to seize Mr Bundy’s cattle.
The background of the story is that Cliven Bundy, a rancher who lives in the state of Nevada, has been letting his cattle graze illegally on land that belongs to BLM. The attempted seizure of his cattle was the culmination in a long legal battle that started in 1993 when Mr Bundy stopped paying fees for grazing his cattle on federal land, “I have no contract with the United States government. I was paying grazing fees for management and that’s what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay.”
In return the Government says Mr Bundy “owes the American people $1million in unpaid grazing fees and refuses to abide by the law of the land, despite many opportunities to do so over the last 20 years.” The Government has also said that Mr Bundy’s cattle are a danger to desert tortoise in the area so they are therefore classed as an environmental hazard. Again this is just another example of a hypocritical Government at play, if you go on Google earth you will find that the Nevada desert is littered with crater holes from where the US Government tested nuclear bombs throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The welfare of tortoise was clearly not on the agenda during that period.
As always in situations like this ulterior motives have surfaced with rumours online that Senator Harry Reid was behind the land grab so that Mr Bundy’s family can make way for solar power plants that are to be built in the area. In 2012 Harry Reid’s son, Rory Reid, was the chief representative for a Chinese energy firm planning to build a $5-billion solar plant on public land in Nevada.
Mr Bundy argues that his family has had cattle grazing on the land since 1870 and the Government has no right to tell him where he can graze his cattle and at what cost. I suppose if we are going with historical claims of rights to land then the Native Americans are in with a shout. But of course that is a different story, a genocide that controlled modern history likes to pretend never happend. The BLM began their roundup of Mr Bundy’s cattle on April 5th 2014 but there was a surprise twist in the tale when people being described as “militia” came to Mr Bundy’s aid and supported him in stand- off against the Government.
This is why gun control is the number one concern for the US Government at the moment because whatever people are calling the shots behind the puppet politicians they cannot fully implement their plans whist they are faced with fully armed US citizens. One person said to me yesterday that guns only bring tyranny, not freedom. To this comment I do agree however we do not live in an ideal world and guns do exist which is why it is imperative that we don’t create a situation where a heavily armed tyrannical government is in control over a large unarmed population. If the citizens of the USA lose their rights to bear arms then it is goodbye freedom.
Not that it matters much but I personally support Mr Bundy and his actions, he is a brave man who has decided to take a stand. It was disappointing to see that the divide and conquer technique of left/right wing politics came into play with some people saying that Mr Bundy has broken the law so he should face the consequences. I think these people have completely missed the point being made. He is standing up against Government and their ever increasing infringement into people’s private lives through draconian laws and policies.
It’s time to question who does Government serve because once you ask yourself this question you find that it serve the interests of big business and wealthy individuals. Not necessarily a bad thing until you realise that their interests come as a direct conflict against yours. I see this incident as a positive step, a sign that people are no longer willing to lay down and be walked all over by a corrupt and unjust Government.
